How to Approach Muhurat Trading (2025) – Strategy & Tips

Here are some guidelines and suggestions for how investors might think about this session:

Before the session

  • Define your objective: Are you looking to make a small token purchase for symbolism? Or are you planning to build a meaningful investment? Be clear.

  • Research and shortlist stocks: Since the trading window is short, it’s wise to have your list ready ahead of time — blue-chips, quality companies or those you believe in for the long term.

  • Check liquidity: Some less liquid stocks may experience volatility or poor order execution in the short window.

  • Avoid over-trading/jumping purely because of mood: The “festival + tradition” mood can tempt impulsive trades. But treat it with discipline.

  • Set budget / risk parameters: Decide how much you intend to invest (given that this is a short, symbolic session) and that you’re comfortable holding for long term.

  • Understand the timing / segments: Be aware of pre-open, main window, order modification cut-offs. Being ready helps execution.

    During the session

    • Focus on execution: Since only one hour is available, enter your orders early (or have placed them) rather than waiting until the last minute.

    • Stick to your plan: Don’t deviate into speculative, high-risk trades just because it’s “festival time.”

    • Be prepared for movement: Short session may see more volatility (especially in lesser stocks).

    • Consider symbolic element: Many investors use this as a “starter” trade — for example, invest a fixed small amount in a quality stock, and then build gradually.

    • Avoid panic: If you see adverse price movement during the hour, remind yourself of the long-term nature. This is not necessarily a day to trade in and out.

    After the session

    • Don’t judge performance too eagerly: The session is more symbolic than predictive. The long-term holding matters more.

    • Review your investments: Post-session, you can review your portfolio, and decide how you will build or allocate further.

    • Use as entry point (if appropriate): If you’ve bought something you believe in, you can consider this as the start of your investment journey, not just a one-off.

    • Keep medium/long-term view: Treat the purchase as the seed; the growth will come over years, not minutes.

    Mistakes to avoid

    • Chasing “flashy stocks” simply because the mood is positive.

    • Investing large amounts purely because “it’s Muhurat time” without underlying conviction.

    • Expecting instant returns just because you bought in the Muhurat session.

    • Ignoring liquidity or execution issues because of short window.

    • Leaving orders until the last minute without planning — risking poor fills or higher costs.

FAQs

Q1. Can I both buy and sell during Muhurat Trading?
Yes — you can place buy or sell orders just like in normal trading. It is not restricted to “buy only”.

Q2. Does the one-hour session guarantee returns?
No. It is symbolic and while sometimes the market has reflected positive sentiment, long-term returns depend on fundamentals, valuations, market conditions etc.

Q3. Should I invest only during Muhurat?
Not necessarily. While it’s a nice moment to make a purchase, the bulk of investing should be driven by your strategy, research, timelines and diversification. Treat it as one part of your investment journey.

Q4. What if I miss the one hour?
No need to worry. Markets will resume regular trading the next session (though regular markets will be closed that day except for MUHURAT). Your investing doesn’t hinge solely on this hour.

Q5. Does it apply to derivatives / commodities?
Yes. The exchanges treat the session across segments (equity, F&O, currency, commodity derivatives) albeit with their respective rules/cut-offs.
